Data centers have become the epicenter of many communities’ resistance to extractive, abusive corporate power. There have been literally hundreds of data center fights in communities across the country over the past several years, almost always led by local residents with very little experience in political organizing, but who feel their lives are being made drastically worse by data centers moving into their back yards. Over the past year, Who Shall Rule podcast co-host Danny Caine travelled to some of the communities where these fights have been happening to explore why people are organizing to fight these AI factories, and how existing data centers have impacted their lives.
Danny is the host of of Building Local Power, the official podcast of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, and his reporting led to a new multi-episode season of BLP entited “The Data Centers Are Coming.” In this episode of the WSR pod, we talk to Danny about his reporting, and lessons he learned while traveling to the hear of America’s data center resistance.
